Have you felt like your job or career earns you a solid living, but is devoid of meaning or purpose? Does your professional and personal life balance seem weighted in a direction that leaves you feeling burned out, unmotivated, and depleted? Do you know you want to switch professional gears, but are struggling with worries about potential rejection, failure, or financial loss by making a change? Are you just starting out in a new field and are experiencing some feelings of inadequacy when comparing yourself to your co-workers or your boss, or wonder if you’ve made a huge mistake by choosing this career?
Our livelihoods and often our identities are largely contingent on the job, career, or life’s work we choose. It can feel like we dare not make a mistake when deciding on our paid labor goals, lest we will suffer financial or emotional ruin. Overwhelming feelings and the potential for stress and anxiety are often involved when making choices that could impact our abilities to provide for our families, to live comfortably with opportunities for recreation and leisure, or to be passionate about our work. We certainly live in a culture where we hear messages that we don’t do enough, don’t earn enough, and just plain AREN’T enough. These messages only add to the difficulty to start a new career, to make a big career change, or to even retire from a long-term career that offered security and a sense of who we are in the world.
At Fresh Air Counseling, not only do we understand the feelings of financial or emotional instability, identity impacts, and mood effects that can come from job transition and beginning or changing a career, we offer specialized solutions and counseling tailored to your unique situation. As both a mental health therapist and a rehabilitation counselor, we have expertise to help manage the emotional difficulties that often accompany the choice to move in a valued or meaningful career trajectory using evidence-based treatments for anxiety, depression, and improved self-compassion and confidence. The career counseling experience is adapted to where you are in the present time, whether exploring new career or vocational options or assessing the market for employment in an existing career. The counseling process may involve taking an interest inventory, a Knowledge, Skills and Aptitude assessment, or a transferable skills analysis (to see how skills from past experiences may transfer into a new job or career path). Together, we can develop or refine a resume, perform internet job searches, apply for jobs, practice interviewing skills, evaluate different volunteering organizations, or explore educational/academic opportunities that may be further enhance your career options. Even though beginning a new career, finding a new job, or looking for greater purpose post-retirement may feel overwhelming or scary at times, clients have expressed feelings of security and assurance knowing they do not have to make huge changes all at once, that they can work toward goals in small and meaningful ways, and that they have Fresh Air Counseling as a partner throughout the process. We feel humbled by the incredible strength and courage our clients have demonstrated when moving from a job or career where they felt complacent and bored, or stressed yet stable, into a vocational program, employment opportunity or field where they experienced passion, more balance, and less stress.
